Art Exhibition
An exhibition of silk paintings, watercolours, prints and textile
images
27 July 2002
Skipton Castle played host to an exhibition by three artists in contrasting
media. The Granary building of Skipton Castle is a perfect backdrop for
this kind of arty stuff. We wandered in, look around, grabbed some pics
and chatted to one of the artists Wilson Harvey, who until very recently
lived in Skipton.
Gilly Craven
Gilly has always been fascinated by 16th and 17th century embroidery &
textiles. After gaining an honours degree in Fine Art at Manchester and
working several years in the Museums Service with a large textile collection,
she developed her interest by creating embroidered mirror frames, boxes
and cushions for museums and private collections. She has exhibited at
the Chelsea Craft Fair, Kensington Town Hall, and the Royal Festival Hall,
as well as in Yorkshire, and has much work commissioned. Recently Gilly
completed the'Creative Embroidery' City & Guilds course at Craven
College.
Christine Frost
Since coming to live in Skipton eight years ago, Christine has exhibited
with Craven Art Club and had paintings chosen for inclusion in several
Yorkshire Artists' Exhibitions. She has also had a solo exhibition in
the Craven District Council offices (Nov 2000 - March 2001) as part of
their Artists in Residence scheme. Christine enjoys exploring different
painting techniques and media. Her work with silk is stimulated by the
unpredictability and vibrancy of the points and a fascination with the
'fluid' nature of different types of silk. She hopes, in both her framed
pieces and her unframed hangings, to create a sense of immediacy and movement
to convey something of the excitement she finds in creating the images.
Wilson Harvey
After many years of painting for pleasure, Wil turned professional two
years ago specialising in pen-and- ink/watercolour commissions of house-portraits
and landscapes. He has always been intrigued by the contrast that ink
brings to paintings & drawings and recently trained at Bradford College
and Craven College in printmaking. This has allowed Wil to extend his
painting techniques into etchings and woodcut prints with bold ink designs.
He has exhibited with the Stirling Art Club and Craven Art Club.
